The Benefits of Boarding
Keep your bird safe this summer

All too often a new or perspective bird owner will say "But what would I do with the bird when I go on vacation?" Like most pets, birds are completely dependent on you as their owners. They rely on you to change their water daily, to feed them, and to give them attention. They also depend on you for safety; when left home alone or under the supervision of someone inexperienced, accidents are made all the more possible.
Leaving a bird home, especially alone, is never a good option if you are going to be away for more than a day or two. If you are only going to be gone for this short amount of time, just make sure to leave an extra source of food and water for your bird in the cage. Anything longer than a day or two, and water will become stagnant or full of waste material, and food supply will run out. It may be a good idea to have someone able to check in on your bird's food and water supply while you are gone.
Again, anything longer than a day or two can prove to be dangerous or damaging to your bird. Recruiting a babysitter is an option, however accidents can always happen. For example, a person unfamiliar with birds would not know what to do if the bird got out or got injured in some way. Also, a bird can get stressed and frightened if around a person it is not familiar with; the babysitter is likely to get a bad bite, and the bird severely stressed. Many types of birds (such as cockatoos or African Grays) can develop anxiety, aggression, or depression if their owners suddenly disappear for a long time and they are left without any comfort.
If you are going to be leaving your bird for more than a couple days, you should consider boarding. At World of Birds, we offer a fun, healthy environment-- a birdie hotel if you will. All of our guests receive top care; they are placed in a social yet safe environment, where they will have both bird and human interaction throughout the day. Cages are disinfected and cleaned thoroughly after every use, and during each bird's stay, cages are spot-cleaned to ensure top sanity. To further promote safety, each guest is required to provide a note of health approval from a vet, and in case of any emergency, an avian veterinarian is located two minutes up the road from us.
We provide food for every bird (unless the bird is on a specific, regulated diet, such as Harrison's), and change it daily. We always encourage owners to bring in treats, but we love to chop up fresh fruit or vegetables for our guests. Besides extra treats, all that we ask owners to bring are plenty of toys! Owners can arrange their companion's cage however they like (we provide perches).
Overall, boarding is a much better experience for your bird--as long as you schedule an appointment by calling our store in advance, we will see to it that your bird is taken special care of for however long he/she needs to stay. Each year, especially during the summer, we hear of tons of birds who either escaped the house-hold and could not be found, or suffered from some kind of unpredictable accident while under the supervision of a kind of babysitter. If you're going away this summer, especially for a full vacation, you may want to seriously consider boarding your bird.

If you have any further questions or concerns, or you'd like to book a birdie-room, never hesitate to call our store:

KATIE'S CAFE
An Appetizer for All!

For this month's recipe, Katie was in the mood for something fancier that her fellow bird-friends and their owners could share!

Bird-Healthy Pasta Salad

KateThis recipe calls for:
-pasta
-tomatoes
-mozzarella cheese
-pine nuts
-basil
-zucchini

Start with a package of pasta; you can feed your bird pasta cooked or raw, however for this recipe's purpose, cooked is probably tastier. Cook the pasta according to the directions on the pasta's package. Once it is made, chop up one of the tomatoes (take care to wash all the vegetables thoroughly). Slice a few pieces of mozzarella cheese and several slices of zucchini. If you'd like, you may cook the zucchini, but take care to not use much butter, salt, or other additives, unless bird-approved. Add a handful of pine nuts and several leaves of basil. If yours needs a little dressing, try olive oil or balsamic vinegar. These are not bird-safe however! If you'd like a dressing for your bird, try using peanut or safflower oil (which are just as healthy for you). Toss all the ingredients together. Chill in the refrigerator for a refreshing meal, or heat up to melt the mozzarella. Either way, both are tasty and healthy! For even healthier choices, use whole-wheat pasta, and organic vegetables.

Bird Profile of May: Senegal

senegal 1        Straight from the African Savanna is this month's character: the Senegal Parrot. Senegal Parrots are one of the most demanded parrots offered in aviculture. This is probably because they are often referred to as the "apartment" parrot: Senegals are both small in stature and quiet in voice. They are stocky and short, averaging only 9 inches long. They're also quiet; they are unable to scream or squawk, but instead squeak occasionally. They are able to talk however, usually picking up a handful of words, or phrases.
Senegals are sweet, and known to be very shy, especially as babies--they require a lot of patience when young, for they get scared easily. Once they open up however, they are a joy to have in both a family or a one-person household. They are also know to get along well with other birds and like companionship. However, if you are planning to add another companion, be careful! Senegals get very attached to their owners and can get extremely jealous of a new addition to the family. Either raise your Senegal with another bird, around the same time as another bird, or introduce the new bird very, very, slowly. Senegals can be social and love attention--many thoroughly enjoy head rubs once they get used to you!

Senegal in a nutshell:

Size: A small, but stocky parrot.

Temperament: Relatively calm. Can be very affectionate and like to play, but are not hyper-active.

Cage Size: More space is always ideal, but a 22x 18 or a 26x 20 cage would be a great size.

Volume: May squeak from time to time but are otherwise silent. They can learn to talk but are perfect for quiet households or apartments.

Training: They can learn a variety of commands as they are very smart. They typically are very well behaved and not "mischievous." Babies are usually very shy and timid, so patience early on may be necessary.

Accessories: Love toys, especially ones they can chew!

Alert! Allergy Season!
Springtime Allergies Washed Away

Springtime is beautiful: the flowers bloom, the grass grows, and yet, the allergies take over. Of the many reasons birds make great companions, one is that they typically are not an allergy problem (like cats, dogs, and other furry animals often can be). However, springtime allergies to pollen can be irritated by dust, which some species of birds can accumulate if not bathed properly. Bathing your bird throughout the year is always a healthy choice for you and your companion. However, during the springtime, especially if you have sensitive allergies, a little extra bathing can do a world of difference.
Water sprayed from a clean spray bottle will work for many birds. You can also try taking your bird into the shower with you, as long as you keep them out of reach of your soap or shampoo. Shower perches are a great option if you need a place for your bird to sit. Most shower perches use large suction cups to attach to your shower wall, for easy and quick application and removal. There are some kinds of birds however that may need a little more than just water to ease dust and dander. Most species native to Australia (and some native to Africa) develop a thicker dust-like-dander that can trigger sneezes if the bird is not bathed often. Cockatoos and African Grays are arguably the most notorious for becoming dusty. For these guys, there are a variety of shampoos available; Mango Parrot Shampoo offers shampoos specific to different species. There is one geared specifically towards Cockatoos, Grays, and even one for Amazons. We also carry Mango's corresponding bath sprays for different bird species.
Also on the "dusty" list are birds like Cockatiels, English Budgies, and Parakeets. Because these guys are tiny, water will do the trick mostly. If you want or need an extra boost however, try Feather Glo. This is a spray that can be used on all birds. It penetrates deeply into the feathers, easing dander and any build-up. It also brightens and softens feathers. Another great choice is AVIx Bird Rain Tropical Spray, which is an Aloe-Vera based formula; it offers moisture and shine, particularly beneficial to birds with any sort of skin condition. We sell a variety of shampoos and sprays--you can find them on our website or in our store. If you ever have any questions or concerns, or just want to know what kinds of product is best suited for your bird, never hesitate to call or email us!

Planet PleasuresToy Profile: The Eco-Friendlies

Planet Pleasures is an excellent line of toys for birds. Many of the products are some our most popular! But did you know that all those colorful birdie pinatas, adorable flower bouquets, and pretty stars are made environment-friendly? While other leading brands of toys are equally fun and safe for birds, most use components like metal, plastic, rope, etc, which are not necessarily environment-friendly. However, all of the Planet Pleasures toys are made using natural and bio-degradable materials. For example, the toys include palm leaf fibers as a natural and tough alternative to leather, oyster and coconut shells instead of plastic, and abacca fibers and bamboo as natural and durable sources of wood. None of the products are made with plastic or glue, and all the colors are simply food dye. Many of the toys also use cuttle bone and corn husks for healthy chew toys. None of the toys include metal quick-links either; instead, hooks made of bamboo or woven fibers are used. Planet Pleasures have toys available for birds of all shapes and sizes. Because they are made of natural materials, the toys are also a smart economic choice!
