Get Ready to Snuggle!
Sleepy Tents are a must-have item!

Of all the things you imagined a bird loving to do, did you ever think they'd love to snuggle? While each bird and bird species is different, many birds love to snuggle with you, but also in something warm and fuzzy when they go to bed. Sleepy tents and huts are made to serve this purpose! There are a variety of soft and fuzzy teepees, tents and huts sold to accommodate all shapes and sizes of bird. Having a secure place to sleep at night can help soothe a stressed bird, prevent night-frights and offer all-around comfort for your companion. Birds love to sleep in them, tunnel around during the day and play on top of them.  Few things are cuter than your bird popping his head out of a mini-tent. There are many different styles and fun colors to choose from; everything from tie-dye to flower-print; teepees to tents with built-in perches. We carry all of these and more in our store. We have recently added a new assortment of bright new colors and a couple of new styles to our tent section. Come in and check them out!

We love to meet your feathered friends! Feel free to bring them with you while you shop!

The "Pros" of Wing Clipping
Leave it to the professionals, but know how the job should be done!

While the idea of clipping a bird's wing feathers may be unnerving to some, it does not cause the bird any pain or discomfort and, when done properly, is not long-lasting or permanent. More importantly, clipping your bird's wings can prevent serious, life-threatening troubles; every year tons of bird-owners lose their birds due to accidents such as a window or door being left open and the bird getting outside. Even a well-trained bird, once outside, becomes extremely frightened, expecting you to come and rescue him/her, when often they are well out of reach (most exotic birds cannot survive outdoors for more than a few days). Full-flighted birds can also crash into things, such as windows or furniture, which can cause serious injury or death. For these reasons and more, it is healthier and safer to trim your bird's wings.
While some owners prefer to trim their birds' wings themselves, it is not recommended. Accidents are always much more likely to occur with an untrained hand. Therefore, you should leave the job to the professionals and take your companion to either an aviary veterinarian or a bird-specific store (such as World of Birds). Regardless of where or who you take your bird to, you should always be aware of the proper way to clip a bird's feathers, so you're getting your money's worth and your bird is groomed properly and safely. Clipping a bird's wing improperly can either fail to inhibit a bird's flight, or cause pain and lasting damage to the bird. As an owner, you are responsible for your bird's health and safety.

Typically, clipping a bird is a two person job. One person holds the bird while the other clips. Watch to make sure the bird is being held in something soft like a towel; holding in a towel provides a cushion for the bird when the bird struggles during clipping (very small birds may be the exception; a second person or a towel may just serve as obstructions).

The best places to take your bird to be clipped are avian veterinarians or bird-specific stores, like World of Birds. We clip wings and nails for only $12.50 each. Just call ahead of time to make sure we can take you!
KATIE'S CAFE
Another fun treat to try
Harrisons

While not her own personal creation, Katie highly recommends Harrison's Original Bread Mix as this month's recipe! It serves as an excellent table-food-like treat that is a certified organic and healthy. The mix's ingredients include Harrison's organic bird food, organic gray millet, organic sweet corn and baking powder, and calcium carbonate.
To make it is easy! Pre-heat the oven to 350°F. Combine the bread mix with two eggs (preferably organic), no shells. If you like, remove the yolk to reduce fat. Also add in 1 tablespoon of AVIx Sunshine Factor (or high quality vegetable oil) and 1 cup of water. Use the mix to fill a greased bread pan or muffin tins. DO NOT bake the bread in non-stick (PTFE-coated) cookware. The fumes can be extremely toxic to birds. Bake the bread for about 25-35 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. You can serve it warm or cool to your bird--either way is yummy!
Because the bread does not contain any preservatives, it will only last about a week in the refrigerator, but it can last up to a year in the freezer. Just remember that if you re-heat it, do not in a plastic container; re-heating food in plastic can transfer damaging toxins into the food. This is not healthy for birds or their owners.

***To add a little something extra to the treat, Katie would like to recommend adding fruit or nuts! Her personal favorite is papaya and peanuts!****

Bird Profile of the Month:
Green Cheek Conures
turtle           Do not be fooled! The adorable bird featured on the right may be teeny but he is packed with personality! Green Cheek Conures are small birds--one of the tiniest conures in aviculture. Like nearly all conures, the Green Cheeks are native to Central and South America (mostly south). They typically average 10 inches long (from beak to end of tail) and weigh in at only 60-80g.
In terms of personality, Green Cheeks are known to have a lot of it. They are feisty and energetic; they need a lot of handling and sometimes patience when they are babies because of their outgoing, rambunctious ways. But, with proper care, training, and attention they are real sweeties; they are noted for loving to catch a ride in their owner's sweaters, sometimes even burying into a shirt pocket! They appreciate a good head-scratch and don't mind being cuddled by their owners. They love things like sleepy tents and teepees to snuggle into and cuddle up next to. True to their conure nature, they are also quite the entertainers. Green Cheeks love to roll around on the floor with a good foot toy; they will be perfectly happy to sit on their backs holding a toy with their feet. In our store, Green Cheeks always get goofy reputations--they hang from the ceilings of their cages or run to the front and bounce up and down at customers.
Another interesting fact about Green Cheeks is that their coloration greatly varies. The Normal Green Cheek (pictured at the top), is primarily green with a bit of red on the belly and tail. A gray-silver tint of color spreads down under the throat, and the wings sport a lovely blue. Their faces, as you can see, are accented with bright white patches around the eyes. Other types of Green Cheeks however range from being green but with much more red on the bellies (Crimson Bellied and Maroon Bellied) to being a pale yellow-sandy color accented with turquoise and pinkish-red (Cinnamon). Some of the more uncommon types include Green Cheeks that are predominantly blue-green (Turquoise) and some that are almost entirely red and yellow (Pineapple). There are also Yellow-Sided, Painted, and Olive Green Cheeks. The color variations are limitless, and each bird usually has some unique coloration of its own.
Regardless of the color, all Green Cheeks can make excellent companions. Because they are tiny and therefore fragile, Green Cheeks may not make the best first-birds for young or impatient children; they would make a much better first bird for older children or adults. They can do well in households with many owners or only one--they are very social, so as long as they are getting attention they are happy. Conures in general are not great speaking birds, however Green Cheeks have been known to pick up a few words or noises. They are in no way "loud" birds however; they may squeak from time to time but are physically incapable of making any large squawk or screech. Because of their small size, playful attitude, and affectionate nature, it should not be a surprise that Green Cheeks are one of the most popular birds to own. They adorable and fun and are truly exciting little companions.

Green Cheeks in a nutshell:

Size: small--8 to 10 inches long

Temperament:
Feisty and playful. Love and need attention. With handling, very affectionate.

Cage Size:
They will do well in an 18x18 or 22x 17 iron cage.

Volume:
They can squeak once in a while, or mumble if they learn to talk, but are otherwise quiet. Great for apartments.

Training:
They can learn a myriad of commands, but their energetic and sometimes stubborn natures may take some patience to overcome.

Accessories:
Lots of toys! They love chewy and plastic toys, bells, sleepy tents--just about anything.
