KATIE'S CAFE'
We all know birds should not live by seed alone. Katie (our mascot) would like to share one of her favorite recipes. Now remember, not all birds take to new foods right away. This does not mean that with some encouragement they will not try them. You as the bird parent will have to find out what motivates your bird to eat. Katie feels that since birds see in color, a few tricks to try would be to camouflage their food with food coloring. For example if they like cherries but won't try a food you want to give them add a few drops of red food coloring to the food your trying to get the bird to eat.If your bird does not like the smell of mashed potatoes but, loves bananas add some banana extract to the mashed potato
1 c Flour
3/4 c Whole Wheat Flour
1 Tsp Salt
1 Tbsp Baking powder
1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
1/2 c Chopped Nuts
1/2 c Chopped Dates
2 Eggs with Shells
3/4 c Milk
1 c Cooked Mashed Sweet Potatoes
1/4 c Melted Butter
Mix the first 7 ingredients together. Wash the eggs and blend including the shells. Add the eggs to the remaining moist ingredients and stir. Blend together with dry ingredients until combined. Spoon into greased muffin tins and bake at 425 F for about 25 mins. or until springy to touch.

Bird Profile of the Month: Congo African Gray
For this month's bird profile we tackle one of the most famous bird personalities: they've made a great impression on TV shows such as Animal Planet's "Pet Star," have been the starring subject of best-selling novels, and are happily kept as companions to thousands of people. The Congo African Gray parrot is arguably one of the most famous exotic birds. They are one of the best talking birds. The difference between them and the other good speaking birds, is they can tell the difference between who is speaking the words. My African Grey Rambo would say Larry in my wife's voice and answer in my voice What. This is only a small sample of the ability of these amazing birds. My wife recorded Rambo and counted 200 words. For a good example of a Greys speaking ability Google Einstein the African Grey Parrot. When an African chose's you to become his friend you have been bleesed for a lifetime.
We have two African Grey's available one speaking.

| Responses to "Quaker Parakeets"
In my opinion, the Quakers should be dealt with humanely and relocated when nests obstruct utitlies and such equipment. However, should they multiply to unforeseen huge number then they should be treated like the deer. They should be protected but over population should be whittled down. hey can either be culled or relocated to other areas or sent to zoos or sanctuaries. Sincerely, Judith M.
As an owner of 2 of these little guys, Id like to see them better protected! There is also a colony in Hampton Va., Chicago and Denver in addition to those mentioned by you.
As the Chair of our local Bird Club(Southwest Va. BC)we are currently trying to get the local power Co. let us know when there is a colony and to let us be there when they cut it down. I'd hope that all clubs will get this involved.. Sue B
Regarding the Quaker Parrots, I believe there should be some way of gently saving their lives. Nothing should be done to hurt them in any way. Also, Andy, our Mini Macaw, which we purchased from you some l9 years ago, is just doing wonderfully. He is very intelligent, and he keeps us laughing. In this day and age, laughing once in a while is a good thing. Take care and have a happy and healthy winter including all your little birdies. I shall pray for the little Quakers. It is not their fault that they have landed in this area. They should be regarded with much respect. Sincerely, Susan and the "Zoo Crew"

 What's New
Foraging Toys
- In the wild, birds will spend most of their day foraging, or searching, for food. The many skills used while foraging stimulates them both physically and mentally. For many pet birds foraging behavior rarely occurs because food is plainly placed in a bowl in front of them. A natural activity that would take up most of their day has now been decreased to few minutes. Naturally, birds spend most of their day foraging, interacting with the flock, grooming/preening, and sleeping. If a foraging type activity is not provided for birds in captivity this leaves several hours per day left with nothing to do. Understandably, we work and have our own responsibilities... but we do give our beloved pet birds as much time and love as we possibly can! However during that time we are not around this leaves our birds with little to do. Many birds will spend that time grooming. Often developing into feather plucking/over preening issues.
The benefit to giving your bird foraging activities/toys will alleviate boredom and help prevent behavioral issues. Foraging provides your bird a challange which will give your bird physical and mental exercise.
Start by using your birds favorite treat and explore the toy with your bird. Show your bird how it opens and how to get the treats out.

Birds can be great pets, and a relationship with them can be nurtured and grown. These intelligent creatures enjoy learning from their owners, and can quickly grow into affectionate pets. They are fun and entertaining, and are often the ideal pets.

Top Ten List of
Dangerous/Poisonous
Common Household Items
The bird's anatomy is very efficient at processing the air to get the high level of oxygen required to fly. Unfortunately this makes them very susceptible to common household items that humans are not susceptible to. There are also other items in your house that can be dangerous to a bird in your house. Here's a list of some common Dangerous and Poisonous Household Items.
Scented Candles and Air Fresheners - They make the house smell good but make it hard to breath for a bird.
Predators - This includes dogs and cats.
Cleaning Supplies - Toxic fumes from cleaning supplies can be deadly. This includes (but isn't limited to) Bleach, ammonia, carpet cleaners, etc.
Household Plants - There are huge lists (way too big for a top ten list) of which plants are safe and which are not safe. If you don't know for sure then keep them away from you bird.
Fresh Paint - Thinking about painting a room? Don't forget to take the parrot out of the house and don't bring it back until the house is clear of that lovely "fresh paint" smell.
Smoke - This includes cigarettes, cigars and tobacco pipes. This also includes cooking smoke if you cook like me and burn everything that you cook.
Teflon Toxicity - Also know as PTFE. This is a result of overheating nonstick cookware.
Self-Cleaning Ovens - Self-Cleaning ovens are great. Just turn it on and you can leave. If you do turn it on and leave, don't forget and leave the parrot behind.
Aerosol Sprays - Most aerosol sprays are hazardous to your bird's health.
Flying Dangers - Clean windows are dangerous to wild birds trying to fly into your home and dangerous to your pet birds trying to fly out of your home. Ceiling fans are another flying danger. It's best to turn off ceiling fans while the parrot is out of its cage.
